What is a GWA Calculator?
A GWA calculator is a tool that computes a Filipino student’s General Weighted Average by applying the standard Philippine weighted average formula automatically. You enter each subject’s final grade and the number of credit units it carries. The calculator multiplies each grade by its units, adds all the products together, then divides by total units enrolled. The result is your GWA on the Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 numerical scale instantly, accurately, and without manual computation.
This GWA Calculator supports the standard 1.00 to 5.00 scale used by most Philippine colleges, the UP grading system with its 4.00 conditional pass and DRP notation, the PISAY percentage-based scale from 70 to 100, the NU and UST systems with their specific Dean’s List conditions, and the DepEd Senior High School grading framework. All university modes are accessible through the tabs at the top of the calculator above.

What is GWA? General Weighted Average Explained
GWA stands for General Weighted Average. It is the official academic performance metric used by colleges and universities across the Philippines. Unlike a simple average that gives every subject equal weight, the GWA multiplies each subject’s grade by the number of credit units it carries before computing the average. A 5-unit Engineering major has five times more influence on a student’s GWA than a 1-unit Physical Education class.
Your GWA appears on your grade slip at the end of every semester. It determines scholarship eligibility, Dean’s List recognition each semester, Latin honor qualification at graduation, and in many Philippine job applications it is the first filter employers apply when screening fresh graduates.
In the Philippine grading system, grades run on a scale from 1.00 to 5.00. A grade of 1.00 is the highest possible mark representing 96 to 100 percent performance. A grade of 5.00 means the subject was failed. A grade of 3.00 is the minimum passing mark at most universities representing exactly 75 percent. This descending scale is the complete opposite of the American GPA system where higher numbers mean better performance.
For the complete explanation of what GWA means and why the Philippine scale works the way it does, see our guide on GWA meaning
GWA Formula How to Compute Your General Weighted Average
The formula for computing GWA in the Philippines is:
GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units for each subject) ÷ Total Number of Units
For each subject on your grade slip, multiply the final grade by the number of credit units that subject carries. Add all the resulting products together to get your total quality points. Divide that total by the sum of all credit units you were enrolled in. The result is your semestral GWA.
GWA Computation Complete Worked Example
Here is a real example of a college student enrolled in five subjects for the semester:
| Subject | Grade | Units | Grade × Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 1.50 | 5 | 7.50 |
| English | 2.00 | 3 | 6.00 |
| Filipino | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Physical Education | 1.25 | 2 | 2.50 |
| NSTP | 1.00 | 3 | 3.00 |
| Total | 16 units | 24.25 |
GWA = 24.25 ÷ 16 = 1.52
This student’s semestral GWA is 1.52 in the Magna Cum Laude range at most Philippine universities. Engineering Mathematics alone with 5 units contributed 7.50 quality points out of 24.25 total which is nearly one third of the entire GWA result from a single subject. This is why improving performance in high-unit major subjects produces dramatically greater GWA improvement than improving performance in low-unit electives.

How to Use This GWA Calculator 3 Steps
Our calculator is designed to be the fastest and most accurate GWA tool for Filipino students. Here is how to use it in three simple steps:

Step 1 Select Your University Tab
At the top of the calculator, choose the tab that matches your institution. Standard covers most Philippine universities. The UP System tab applies UP-specific grading rules. The PISAY tab switches to the 70 to 100 percentage scale. The NU and UST tabs apply institution-specific Dean’s List detection. The DepEd tab handles Senior High School grading.
Step 2 Enter Your Subjects Grades and Units
Type each subject name, enter the final grade you received, and enter the number of credit units that subject carries. Click Add Subject to include as many subjects as needed whether for one semester or your entire college career. There is no subject limit.
Step 3 Click Calculate GWA
Your result appears instantly. You will see your exact GWA, your Latin honor status showing whether you qualify for Summa, Magna, or Cum Laude or are in Dean’s List range, your equivalent GPA on the American 4.0 scale, and a complete subject-by-subject breakdown showing the quality points each subject contributed.
How to Solve GWA Using a Calculator Every Scenario
How to Compute GWA for a Single Semester
Enter only the subjects and final grades from that specific semester. The result is your semestral GWA which is the number used to check Dean’s List eligibility, scholarship maintenance requirements, and academic standing for that specific term.
How to Compute Cumulative GWA in College Philippines
Enter all subjects from every semester of your college career together in one session from first year through the most recently completed semester. The calculator computes the correct cumulative weighted average across your entire academic record. This cumulative GWA is the number that appears on your official Transcript of Records and determines Latin honor eligibility at graduation.
Never compute cumulative GWA by averaging your semestral GWAs together. Always compute cumulative GWA from the original grades and units of all subjects combined because averaging semestral GWAs only produces an accurate result if every semester had identical unit loads which is almost never the case.
How to Compute GWA in College What Subjects Count
Include every subject for which you have received an official final grade including major subjects, minor subjects, Physical Education, NSTP, theology, ROTC, and all electives. The only exceptions are DRP subjects at UP which are officially excluded and INC grades which are not included until resolved. All other subjects with any final grade from 1.00 to 5.00 are included regardless of whether they were passed or failed.
How to Compute GWA When You Have an INC Grade
An INC which stands for Incomplete does not enter GWA computation until the student resolves the outstanding requirements and the professor records a final grade. Enter only subjects with official final grades. Once your INC converts to a final grade add it to the calculator to see exactly how it shifts your GWA especially when the INC subject carries many credit units.
How to Compute GWA in the UP System
The University of the Philippines uses the standard 1.00 to 5.00 scale with two important additions. A grade of 4.00 at UP is a conditional pass and not a failing grade. A student who receives 4.00 has one academic year to take a removal examination and replace it with a passing grade. If unresolved it automatically becomes a permanent 5.00. UP also uses DRP notation for officially withdrawn subjects and DRP grades are never counted in GWA. Select the UP System tab in the calculator above to apply these rules automatically.
GWA Calculator with Units Why Credit Units Are Everything
The word weighted in General Weighted Average refers entirely to the credit unit value each subject carries. A 5 unit major course has exactly five times the influence on a student’s GWA as a 1 unit elective. A 3 unit subject has three times the influence of a 1 unit subject.
A student who improves their grade in a 5 unit Engineering major from 2.50 to 1.75 adds 3.75 quality points to their semester total. The same improvement in a 1 unit PE elective adds only 0.75. The Engineering improvement produces five times the GWA impact from the same grade change. This is why every student with a Dean’s List or Latin honor target should direct their primary academic effort toward their heaviest unit major subjects.
Always enter exact credit unit values when using the calculator above. Never estimate or round unit values because the GWA result depends entirely on the precision of the unit entries.
College GWA Calculator Philippines Semestral and Cumulative
Semestral GWA is your weighted average for a single term only. It is evaluated independently each semester and determines Dean’s List eligibility, scholarship maintenance status, and academic standing for that specific term.
Cumulative GWA is your weighted average across your entire college career from every subject from first semester of first year through the final semester before graduation. This is the GWA printed on your Transcript of Records. It is the only GWA that counts for Latin honor determination at graduation.
The calculator above handles both with the same interface. For semestral GWA enter only the subjects from that semester. For cumulative GWA enter all subjects from all semesters together.

Latin Honors Philippines GWA Requirements at Graduation
Latin honors are the highest academic distinctions a Filipino college graduate can earn. They are printed permanently on the diploma announced at graduation and recognized by employers graduate programs and government scholarship bodies across the Philippines and internationally.
Summa Cum Laude GWA of 1.00 to 1.20
The highest Latin honor in Philippine college. It requires a near perfect academic record sustained from first year through graduation. The conditions are absolute zero failing grades anywhere on the complete transcript zero unresolved INC grades at the time of graduation evaluation and no academic disciplinary record. A single grade of 5.00 in any subject at any point permanently disqualifies a student from all Latin honors regardless of how strong all subsequent performance becomes.
Magna Cum Laude GWA of 1.21 to 1.45
The second highest Latin honor. Students graduating Magna Cum Laude are highly competitive for graduate school admissions CHED Faculty Development Programs DOST SEI grants and the most competitive management trainee programs nationwide.
Cum Laude GWA of 1.46 to 1.75
The most commonly awarded Latin honor across Philippine universities. A cumulative GWA of 1.75 is the Cum Laude threshold which is the same number that defines Dean’s List eligibility each semester. Students who make the Dean’s List consistently across their entire college career are building toward Cum Laude graduation.
Dean’s List Semestral GWA of 1.75 or Better
The Dean’s List is awarded each semester to students who achieve a semestral GWA of 1.75 or better with no failing grades and no INC grades in that specific term. Consistent Dean’s List performance across every semester is the most reliable path to Cum Laude recognition at graduation.
For the exact requirements see Dean’s Lister requirements Philippines
GWA vs GPA Difference Conversion Formula and Table
Filipino students applying for international scholarships graduate programs or positions at multinational companies need to convert their Philippine GWA to the American GPA scale. A Philippine GWA of 1.75 which represents excellent Cum Laude performance appears to an American reader as 1.75 out of 4.0 which in their system suggests near failing performance. Converting your GWA before presenting it internationally is essential.
The standard conversion formula is that GPA is approximately equal to 5.0 minus GWA.
| GWA Philippines | GPA US 4.0 Scale | Academic Level |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 | 4.00 | Excellent Summa Cum Laude |
| 1.25 | 3.75 | Superior Magna Cum Laude |
| 1.50 | 3.50 | Very Good Cum Laude range |
| 1.75 | 3.25 | Good Dean’s List and Cum Laude |
| 2.00 | 3.00 | Satisfactory Good Standing |
| 2.25 | 2.75 | Fairly Satisfactory |

Zero Based Grading System Philippines What It Means for GWA
The zero based grading system eliminates the transmutation formula that many Philippine schools traditionally apply. In the traditional transmuted system a student who scores very low on an examination still receives a minimum reported grade through a formula that lifts raw scores artificially. In zero based grading a raw score of zero is recorded as zero. There is no floor.
For GWA computation the grade that enters the calculator is always the final official grade recorded on the grade sheet regardless of whether the institution uses transmutation or zero based grading.

How to Improve Your GWA Strategies That Work
Prioritize High Unit Subjects Above Everything Else
Because GWA is weighted by units improving a grade in a 5 unit major subject produces five times the GWA impact of the same improvement in a 1 unit elective. Every student with a Dean’s List or Latin honor target should identify their highest unit subjects at the start of each semester and direct their primary academic effort toward those subjects first.
Use the Calculator to Compute Target Grades Before the Semester Ends
Enter your current grades with the units locked in then try different hypothetical final grades in the subjects where finals have not yet been submitted. The calculator will show exactly what score you need in each remaining subject to reach your target semestral GWA. A precise numeric target is far more actionable than a vague goal.
Never Allow a Subject to Reach 5.00
A failing grade of 5.00 destroys that semester’s GWA and permanently closes the door to Latin honors at graduation regardless of how excellent all future performance becomes. If you are struggling in a subject mid semester with no path to passing dropping it before the official drop deadline is always preferable to failing it. A DRP does not count in GWA. A 5.00 does permanently.
Know How Your Professors Compute Your Grade
Philippine university professors are required to specify grading component weights in their course syllabus including how much quizzes performance tasks midterms and finals each contribute to the final subject grade. A student who reads and understands their syllabus on the first day of class knows exactly where to concentrate effort for maximum grade impact.
